Mottos I Live By

I would have never guessed 2020 would have gone this way. I wanted to share mottos I live by that may help you during these difficult times.

Make choices that you can look in the mirror and be proud of

This is something my Mom has always told me to do and it never fails. I try to make choices I am proud of. I know if I cannot look in the mirror after, I made the wrong choice.

You are only as good as your last performance

This stems from my theatre background and it can apply to all aspects of your life – education, work, activism, personal relationships, etc. It is a rough saying, but it keeps you striving to be better.

Dress for success/Dress for the job or role you want

This also comes from my theatre background. It is so important to look your best and put your best foot forward. Unfortunately, we are judged based off of our looks so make sure you dress your best.

You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take

If you are a fan of The Office, then you remember Michael Scott claiming this quote (originally said by Wayne Gretzky). It may have been said by the funny and controversial main character of the acclaimed comedy show, but it is still 100% true. You get nothing by being shy and restraining yourself – go for what you want!

Do unto others as you would have them do unto you

This is the golden rule – treat other people with the concern and kindness you would like them to show toward you. When you do something to another – think, would I like this done to me? It really is that simple.

We are more alike, than we are unalike

This is so important. Discrimination/racism/prejudice/sexism/etc. is unacceptable. Like Maya Angelou famously wrote:

Human Family

I note the obvious differences
in the human family.
Some of us are serious,
some thrive on comedy.

Some declare their lives are lived
as true profundity,
and others claim they really live
the real reality.

The variety of our skin tones
can confuse, bemuse, delight,
brown and pink and beige and purple,
tan and blue and white.

I’ve sailed upon the seven seas
and stopped in every land,
I’ve seen the wonders of the world
not yet one common man.

I know ten thousand women
called Jane and Mary Jane,
but I’ve not seen any two
who really were the same.

Mirror twins are different
although their features jibe,
and lovers think quite different thoughts
while lying side by side.

We love and lose in China,
we weep on England’s moors,
and laugh and moan in Guinea,
and thrive on Spanish shores.

We seek success in Finland,
are born and die in Maine.
In minor ways we differ,
in major we’re the same.

I note the obvious differences
between each sort and type,
but we are more alike, my friends,
than we are unalike.

We are more alike, my friends,
than we are unalike.

We are more alike, my friends,
than we are unalike.

Tomorrow is another day

Whatever happens, tomorrow is another day – another day for love, kindness, and positivity.

Trust in the universe. What is for you, no one can take.

There are times I get upset over things that I cannot change and then I remember to trust in the universe – what is for me, no one can take.

The true purpose of life revolves around people and relationships

If there is a meaning or purpose to life, it has to do with the relationships we build and people in general. Money and material things mean nothing. It all has to do with the lives you touch.

We make time for the things we care about

Time is always used as an excuse; it should not be. Ultimately, we make time for the things we care about. This also applies to making excuses for others. if they care, they will make time for you.
